Information for International Patients
Our practice welcomes patients from international locations who are seeking orthopaedic care in Melbourne, Australia. If you are not an Australian citizen or permanent resident and are considering traveling to Australia for a consultation or surgery, there are important requirements you must meet to ensure a smooth and efficient process.
Requirements for International Patients
Valid Visa
You must have a valid visa allowing entry into Australia. This may include a medical treatment visa, or other appropriate visa types.
Ensure that your visa permits sufficient time for the planned treatment, recovery, and follow-up care, if required.
Private Health Insurance or Ability to Self-Fund
International patients are not eligible for Medicare, so you must have private health insurance that covers medical treatment in Australia or be prepared to self-fund all costs, including consultations, surgery, hospital fees, anaesthetist fees, and post-operative care.
Travel Insurance (Recommended)
It is recommended that you have comprehensive travel insurance to cover unexpected events such as medical complications, additional accommodation, or travel changes.
Medical History and Referral
Bring all relevant medical records, imaging (e.g., X-rays, MRIs, CT scans), and a referral letter from your local doctor or specialist (if available). These documents will assist in planning and delivering your care.
Prepayment of Fees
As an international patient, you will be required to prepay the estimated costs of your treatment, including consultation fees and any surgical fees.
A detailed estimate will be provided before any treatment or surgery is scheduled.
Hospital Requirements
If surgery is required, the hospital may have its own criteria and paperwork for admitting international patients. We will assist you in coordinating this process.
